Alright, let's get to the point. There's so much information about Rio, that if I gave you all of it, you would know nothing. So let's just cover the basics. When you book with us, you'll get the full information, not just the basics.

Rio de Janeiro is not the capitol of Brazil, but it's the starting point for travel and leisure. It is the most populous region. Rio is famous for its breathtaking landscape, its laid back beach culture and its annual carnival. Beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema, the Christ The Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) statue, the stadium of Maracanã and Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) are all well-known sights of what the inhabitants call the "marvelous city" (cidade maravilhosa), and are also among the first images to pop up in travelers´ minds, along with the Carnaval celebration.

Prostitution itself (exchanging sex for money) in Brazil is legal, as there are no laws forbidding adult prostitution, but it is illegal to operate a brothel or to employ prostitutes in any other way.

From the Airport
Skip the Currency Exchange booth with their high charges. You can change some money at the taxi stand at the airport. Change about $100. You can change more money tomorrow near Copacabana at much better rates. You won’t read about this in any travel brochure, but we are Budget Travel – we save you money.

Public transportation to your hotel is inconvenient and takes an hour. Take a taxi. (yes, we like saving money too, but sometimes time is more valuable. You can take a high class bus for R$16 or a cheap bus for R$6 but they are all at least an hour.

However, the taxi that is authorized by the airport is too expensive R$100 to Copa. So go downstairs to the Departures area. Ignore the taxis yelling to get customers – they charge double. Walk away from them and you’ll see the area where taxis are dropping off passengers – get one that just dropped off a passenger. yellow taxi. R$65 to Copa. You’ll be taking these yellow taxis everywhere in Rio.

Cellphone
Bring your own smartphone but make sure you don’t turn on your data, or you will be charge like crazy from your American carrier. Most smartphones are international now and have the option of inserting a SIM card. Your phone might keep giving you the annoying notification ‘SIM card not recognized’ but don’t worry about that.

Then go to the airport kiosk to get a SIM card. Vivo is the 3G/4G of choice. ~$10 for a weeks of data. They usually have deals, like “Traveler 1 week rate” so take advantage of that. When it runs out it is very easy to recharge your chip via online at http://www.vivo.com.br When your data runs out, simply go online and select “Recarregue Aqui”. From there you will input your phone number and the amount of money you would like to put on your chip. Once the money is in your account, text “Vivo” to 1515. They will respond with a list of options. Text the number 2 and push send. Next they will send a confirmation message and you will need to text back the word “sim” which means yes in Portuguese.

Make sure your data works (e.g. Facebook or google maps) before you leave the kiosk. This is valuable since you may be taking an Uber out of the airport. Yes, Rio has uber. This way, you still have all your contacts and email or internet settings, since it’s your own phone. But now you have a local Rio phone number. Keep that in mind so that you can give out your phone number to girls that you meet. (and they will never know your US phone number)

You also need to create or have a WhatsApp account on your smartphone. Download it today for free. This is how you will communicate and make contacts with some working girls in Rio.

Money
Change a little bit at the airport exchange. Change the rest from a money changer in the city. Look for "Cambios" These are usually found on the main commercial streets, i.e. Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, one block from the Copacabana sea front, and Rua Visconde de Pirajá, two blocks from the Ipanema beach. Rates vary, so ask around. The shop offering the best rate today may not offer the best rate tomorrow so if you are changing money more than once ask around again.
  • Moedas Moedas, 7 Setembro 88 (A numismatic shop in a little shopping mall downtown). Changes almost any type of currency. Even unexchangeable Paraguaian Guaranis. The rate can be quite bad for less common currencies. No commission
ATM

Look for Visa/Mastercard logos on the terminals themselves and international banks (HSBC, Citi) as the best starting points. Also beware that in Rio specifically, most ATMs are closed between 22:00 and 6:00 (10pm and 6am) so plan accordingly. ATMs from Banco do Brasil works with most foreign Visa cards. Note that if you are withdrawing cash using a foreign card, commission may be added without any warning on the screen. You may not realize that commission has been added to your transaction until you get your receipt at the end of the transaction! That's exactly what Santander at the airport did. It charged R$12 for a R$200 withdrawal without any on-screen warning (Feb 2014)! Meanwhile (Feb 2016) the ATM access fee at the airport has been increased to 20R per transaction. For cash the commission is 30R per transaction plus a percentage of the amount you change. Moreover the rate is 10 to 20% less than in the city. Access fees for ATMs in the city and rates vary. Santander bank charges 20R per transaction, other banks do not charge this fee at all.

Where to Stay
We know the best hotels to stay at that are girl friendly, in the perfect locations. Contact us to become one of our many clients. You don’t want to get screwed over by doing Airbnb and end up getting in trouble, with a girl you can’t get rid of.

Street hookers
Prostitution itself (exchanging sex for money) in Brazil is legal, as there are no laws forbidding adult prostitution, but it is illegal to operate a brothel or to employ prostitutes in any other way.

You can find street walkers in Rio de Janeiro from these areas. Some of the street sex workers in Rio de Janeiro are drug users. If you like to catch a girl from the street and have sex with her in Rio, always use a condom and be careful! Prices for sex services in Rio are higher on high seasons and during festivals and other special events.
  • Av. Atlântica in Copacabana. Some of these street whores cruise the sidewalks while others stand at the end of parked cars in the street. Many are IV drug users, a fair number are transvestites, and high percentages are HIV+. Many of their customers find themselves robbed and beaten by a nearby pimp/boyfriend. Pick pocketing is rampant. Prices are very low if you are a good negotiator. Usually 100 to 300 real is enough for sex in Copacabana.
  • north side of the Central Train Station, get off at the Central Metro. You'll see them on the north side of Rua Senador Pompeu and Rua Barao de Sao Felix. Some also on Rua Marcillio Dias.
  • There's an alley where the locals go to, and they are low class whores mostly. It's hard to find, but it's between Ave Passos and Rua Goncalves Ledo. I didn't know Brasilians could be so fat and ugly. From Central Parque Estamientos to Praca Tiradentes. Not far from here, the young ones used to hang out at Sete de Septembro, between Rua do Verde and Rua Ramalho Ortigao, but the area has been gentrified and it's mostly just shopping now. You'll see a few gems now and then, but be careful - lots of underaged in 2014. Address is 180 Rua Sete de Septembro.
  • Prado Junior, Avenida Gomes Freire (Lapa neighborhoud) and in Praça Mauá. Even though some adult websites say to go to Lapa, they are wrong! The latest updates show that most girls there are transvestites (I also know from experience...I found out in the room! ooof!) But it is definitely a place to pick up local girls who like European guys.
  • The darker mulatas can be found on the streets near the National Museum. On the north side, the cheap girls can be found on Avenida Rotary Internacional. On the east side, Rua General Herculano Gomez. They dress like regular people, but it's obvious they have no other reason for being there.
  • Zona Oeste (West Zone) is a rapidly growing suburban area including primarily the districts of Jacarepaguá, Leme and Barra da Tijuca. At this area you can also find many street prostitutes, but mainly transsexual street whores. One of the prostitution hot spot in West Zone of Rio De Janeiro is the intersection of Av.Nossa Sra. de Copacabana and R. Ronald de Carvalho. Cost is around 100 reals in here for sex.
Brothels
Most whorehouses are located in high-rise buildings. The majority of these places are located in the upper floors of downtown businesses. The first number of the room number indicates the floor. For example, if a brothel is located in Room 902, then you would go to the 9th floor. Don't worry about the doorman, just walk right by them and head to the elevator. Most elevators have a person working it from the inside, and he is usually sitting in a chair, simply just tell him the floor number. Once you arrive at the whorehouse’s room, push the doorbell and wait for someone to answer. You will then be led to a room and shortly, every girl in the whorehouse will come in one-by-one to introduce themselves. Be prepared to say “Muito Prazer” (which means nice to meet you) and you will both exchange a kiss on each cheek. The girl who answered the door (mamasan) will come back after all the girls have introduced themselves and will ask you which girl you want. You will then state her name. She will then ask you for how long; 30min or 1 hour. Almost all whorehouses/massage open at 10am and close at 8pm. The best time to arrive is at 11:30am. You want to get there before the businessmen do, as they go for their lunch break between 12-2pm. Chances are if you arrive at 1pm, all the hot ones will be taken and you will end up with an old hag.

Sex is included in the price (both oral and intercourse) and there are no hidden or extra costs. If they say it’s 160 reis (40 usd) for one (1) hour, that means you can have sex with the girl of your choosing for 1 hour and you may cum up to two times. Some girls will include anal in the price but you must discuss that before hand. There are quite a few in the Cinelândia, Carioca and Uruguaiana neighborhoods in Centro. Most of these places have only a handful of girls available, along with just a few rooms. The girls are of variable quality; they generally are not as pretty as the cutest of the termas girls, but they are often just as skilled, and seem willing to work just as hard or harder for their money. Speaking of which, these places tend to be very inexpensive. Standard sessions are 20 - 30 minutes (with 10 minute programs available in some), and the price is usually 1 real per minute (i.e., about $13 US for a 30 minute session with the current exchange rate) give or take a few centavos. The rooms often leave something to be desired in the hygiene department, but are upscale compared to most of the facilities at a place like Vila Mimosa. Bring a towel along, as some of the places don’t seem to change the sheets!

Several are located on Rua Buenos Aires, on the block across Av. Rio Branco from Termas 4X4. Try Rua Buenos Aires, 85 (3rd, 4th and 5th floors) and 113 (2nd floor). Nearby, on Presidente Vargas (590, room 1317) is a small fast-sex apartment that has about 8 girls. Most are “completa.” One small place is located a few blocks south of Rua Buenos Aires, at Rua Ouvidor, 130, rooms 707 and 911. There were just a few girls here, but you can find a very good 30 minute session for a very reasonable price. At Travessa do Ouvidor, 37 (near the intersection with Rua Ouvidor, east of Av. Rio Branco) you’ll find a small putaria up one flight of stairs. Also nearby is Rua Uruguaiana, 24. Wander up the stairs and on floor 2, 3, and 4 you’ll see several doors open with girls beckoning you to come in. Closer to the Cinelândia metro station you’ll find many apartment brothels. Check out Rua Evaristo da Veiga, 47 (apartments 501, 502, 701, and 702). A few blocks away is a small place at Rua Santa Luzia, 405 (4th floor, room 29). Two more reliably decent spots (decent is a relative term as used here; these are “real-a-minute” putarias after all) include Rua da Carioca, 59 (5th floor) and Avenida 13 de Maio, 47 (rooms 708 and 2408). Many, but not all, of these places will have pamphleteers out front passing out small ads.

There are many, many listings for small places to be found in the classified sections of O Globo and O Dia. (see http://odia.ig.com.br/classificados/ and look under “Casa” and then under “massagens e termas”). Many do not list addresses but provide phone numbers. They come and go very rapidly, so your best bet is to keep an eye on the ads in the papers or check the Brasilian mongering websites. Hint: you probably want to avoid the ads for "quase-mulheres" (transsexuals) unless that’s what gets your juices flowing. Similarly, ads for “coroas” are for older women, which is often code for “old and overweight.” These are generally not MILFs!

Review: The most famous whorehouse in Centro. During peak hours, they probably have around 20 girls to choose from. The facilities are the cleanest, with a shower in each room so you are not walking through the hallways in your towel trying to avoid other men when having to take a shower. I would say it’s the most professionally run. Note: The elevator only goes to the 20th floor, so you need to get out on the 20th floor and walk up to the 21st floor.

Termas
Termas are world famous venues for prostitution in Rio. Termas are like bathhouses where you can have sex with the working girls. It will cost anywhere from 4 to 7 times as much than a brothel but you get basically the same experience when it comes to sex.

What to expect when arriving to a terma:
First you will register with the front desk. They will give you a key with a number on it. The key is for your locker to store things like your phone, wallet, and clothes and the number is used as a reference when you buy drinks or grab a girl to fuck. Your locker key is very important, besides locking up your clothes in a locker it also acts as a "credit card" inside of the termas to purchase drinks, massages, garotas de programa (prostitutes) and so on. Keep track of your key at all times. You will be given a robe and flipflops to change in to. In some termas you stay in your street clothes. Some termas also have a bad habit of providing a girl to help you change, usually these are the worst girls and it is best to ditch them as soon as possible.
You will then head to the “meeting room” where there is a bar and all the girls. Termas usually have a bar, a sauna and other amenities such as TVs with football or soap operas playing.  When you first enter the area where the girls are, you might want to walk around awhile and check the talent out before taking a seat. If you see someone you want to check out closer, just say hi and ask if she wants a drink. If you sit down when you enter, you’re likely to be trapped by one of the more aggressive girls, these girls use this tactic because they’ll get no takers otherwise.
If you buy drinks, expect to pay a premium by paying around 20 to 30 reis for a drink. Girls will typically make advances to you, will give you plenty of eye contact and if they see your interest, they will approach. You of course, can always approach any girl of your liking at any time. Most termas have a “massage room” where you can get a massage from any one of the girls for around R$80-100 reis. They have rooms ranging from a basic bed to luxury suites with jacuzzis. Some rooms are included in the basic price and only charge for suite upgrades, but some termas have a charge for even a basic room. In some termas a suite is just a basic room with a private shower, so you should check before upgrading.

Rules
These rules apply more generally when interacting with the working girls, or garotas de programa and this is what you should tell them: This is not your first trip to Rio, you will be in Rio for several weeks, and you won’t be leaving for at least another week. None of this may be true, but these are the correct answers to the invariable questions you will receive from the girls. The noob who is staying only a few days may receive less attention and poorer service because it’s unlikely he’ll be a steady customer. Similarly, the guy who says “I’m leaving tomorrow and won’t be back for a year” is begging for an unenthusiastic quickie from the girl (known by veterans as the RTF, or “Rio Tourist Fuck”). If, on the other hand, you tell the girl you’ve been in Brasil several times and will be around for awhile, she’s more likely to give her best effort in order to assure customer loyalty and repeat business (yes, from her perspective it is about business).

Payment
While credit cards are accepted at most termas, in many cases you must pay the girls’ fees in cash. All other charges can typically be put on your card. The charges appear on your billing statement in an innocuous form (“Harry’s Grill”). Some add an additional charge for using a credit card. Tipping the girls is not expected and in termas is generally inappropriate, but a small tip for the locker room attendant is always in good form.

Below is a list of termas from best to worst, starting with the first listing.

Escorts
Rio has thousands of prostitutes and every year some percentage of them are turning to advertise their escort services in Rio online.
There are dozens of escort agencies through which you can book girls for a few hours during the day or evening. Many have web sites where you can check out the girls pics (usually minus views of their faces), and many also have advertisements in the classified section of the local newspapers. Descriptions of the girls are rather sensationalized, but they will often tell you if the girl does anal (“completa”) and what other services she offers. Many also have books of photos, so you can go to their offices and select a girl from the book or have a girl bring the book to your hotel/apartment (for a small fee). Most agency staff speak only Portuguese, so arranging something by phone can sometimes be a challenge if you don’t speak the language. The prices vary considerably, but you can generally find a beauty to entertain you for two hours for between 100 and 300 reals.

The escort agencies generally will not let you make a booking unless you have a telephone, so if you are staying in an apartment and don’t have a cell phone, booking escorts can be difficult. One of the nice things about the agencies is that many open fairly early. Let’s say you wake up at 10 a.m. and are feeling pretty horny. Give us a call and you’ll have a pretty little brasileira doing a lap dance on your pole in 20 minutes. Almost all of the agencies advertise prices for 2 hours, but if you’d rather keep your session to an hour, most will give you prices for 60 minutes. Note, however, that the 2-hour prices are always a much better deal.

Vila Mimosa - THE Red Light District
Visit Vila Mimosa as a once in a lifetime thing, and it may not exist 5 years from now. It’s one of those places that’s unbelievable in a bad way, but still a good place to check out this “dirty” and insane red light district of Brazil. Yet this place is dangerous! Don't come here without getting our advice about this place first. Clients only.

VM is a small section in the old downtown area (not far from the soccer stadium, Maracanã) that is home to some very seedy and inexpensive brothels. It caters to the locals. It can get a bit rough, so be careful if you come here by yourself.

VM is located on Sotero dos Reis, near the São Cristovão metro station. Do not plan to walk from the metro station after dark; the surrounding neighborhood is dangerous. The address is near 66 Rua Sotero dos Reis, Praca da Bandeira. The two entrances of the house are identified by yellow awnings and blue awnings placed on the balconies of establishments along the main street. They look like regular bars. The bars are located at the bottom and the rooms for the sex are located on the second floor. It appears to be a shopping arcade, in which a store would be side by side, however, it is bars. In this kind of corridor, the sex trade is intense. There are informal vendors who expose their goods on the floor, the window of a business, and others roam the streets.

There are just 70 houses in the Vila Mimosa village, each one is at least 10 quarters. Almost all the facilities operate 24 hours. There are about 4,500 people traveling in the complex of Vila Mimosa. Transvestites and male prostitutes are not permitted to work at the site, to preserve the tradition, only women are accepted.
Night Clubs

Rio de Janeiro has lots of great nightclubs where you can try to find sex for free. Some nightclub are called "boites" and there are often lots of freelancer prostitutes hanging around and searching for customers.

There are clubs all over Rio, and it’s best to ask locals which are hot, since this changes often.
One nice restaurant, Mostarda, has dancing on the 2nd floor after midnight, and there are lots of beauties.
Nuth, in Barra da Tijuca, is a great dance club. Getting in these places is much like getting in to a trendy club in NY. You have to dress right and look right.

You will generally NOT find pros in these clubs, but it is possible to sweet talk your way into some beautiful young thing’s pants ... if you speak Portuguese and you look like you have $$$. If you look like a guy who’s just hanging out looking for pussy, the girls will avoid you like the plague. Don’t assume that all Brazilian women are dying to fuck foreign men. They assume that most foreigners in Rio are sex tourists, and that any brasileira who is seen with a foreigner is a puta. Consequently, picking up amateurs is not as simple as many have made it sound.

Another common place to search for that girl is the night club area, which is located around Ave. Princess Isabel in Leme. There are many nightclubs in this neighborhood (also sometimes referred to as the Lido). These clubs (or "Boites") open relatively late and feature some exotic dance shows. The cover charges vary from $15-$50 reais and sometimes includes the first drink or two. Drink prices tend to be VERY expensive, so keep an eye on your bar tab and check it each time you order something. Some of the clubs have been known to pad the tab with mystery charges.

These clubs are filled with women, some who dance and some who are just there to keep you company, share your drinks, and maybe go home with you. The dancers are also available to head home with you. The house makes its money off the drinks and cover. Barbarela’s does probably charge a few to take a girl out. The best-known places are Barbarela’s, Kalabria, Frank's, La Cicciolina, New Pussycat, Don Juan’s, and the New Scotch Bar. Barbarela's is known to have the most attractive women, but an evening here can get pretty expensive, and the place will pad your tab if you’re not very careful, after 4am they head over to Kalabria for after hours. Most of the girls will ask for $300-400 reais for 2 hours but will negotiate from there. Many will not want to spend the night; they would prefer to make the quick money and then find another customer later. Also worth noting is the fact that while many of these places open late, many of the hottest garotas get pulled out by 11 or so, especially at Barbarela’s.

These Nightclubs are located in Copacabana:
  • Barbarella’s, Rua Min. Viveiros de Castro, 24, Copa.
  • Kalabria, Rua Ronald de Carvalho, 21 - Copa Tel. +55 21 2541-9248, Open Mon-Sun 10pm - 8am. (After Hours)
  • Frank’s Bar, Av. Princess Isabel, 185, Copa.
  • La Cicciolina, Av. Princess Isabel, 185, Copa.
  • New Scotch Bar, Av. Princess Isabel, 7, Copa.
  • Pussycat, Rua Belfort Roxo, 88B, Copa.

The night in Rio is pretty much divided between mainstream and underground:

-Mainstream would be such "raves" and big electronic festivals, as well as nightclubs like Bombar (Leblon and Barra da Tijuca), Baronetti (Ipanema) and Melt (Leblon) that are devoted to pop, dance and variations of house and trance. They are usually packed with "patricinhas" (tanned, long soft-haired girls with gym-built bodies) and specially "pitboys" (upper/middle-class boys, known for having various degrees of martial arts training) Expect to pay between R$30 and R$50 to get in a club (girls pay less, but all those clubs will have an f/m proportion around 1/3) and between R$50 and R$100 for a "rave" or electronic music party being held at spots like the Marina.
-Most of the underground clubs are on Zona Sul and offer different parties for each day of the week. The underground club scene has a more diverse public, from goths to punks also with strong hedonistic tints. tickets starting as low as R$5 and not going further up than R$25. Some good clubs are Fosfobox (Copacabana), Dama de Ferro (Ipanema) and Casa da Matriz (Botafogo).

Ovehla Negra - a champagne bar in Botafogo with happy hour during the week. It is popular with the young professional crowd working in Centro. Get there early as it gets insanely packed.

Sheenigan’s in Ipanema is historically a Gringo hunting ground. This was one of the best pick-up places, back in the day. located in Ipanema and worth checking out. They have good food and live music.

Nuth in Barra d Tijua - Upscale club that attracts some high-end talent. There is also a strip club close to it, including Buddha Bar.

Rio Scenarium: Famous Samba club in Lapa. If you have dance moves, this is your place. It is also the most famous club in Rio and a must see.

Pretty easy pickings can be found in Shennanigans Irish Pub (Rua Viconde de Piraja 112, Ipanema). Quality is not great but the local girls who come here like gringos. A similar type bar on the other side of Ipanema is Lord Jim (Rua Paul Redfern 63). The bar is more fun with live music but it is harder to pick up here because of its small, cramped size.

Every gringo winds up in Emporio, a bar/lounge whose crowd spills out onto the street (Rua Maria Quiteria 37, Ipanema). I have no idea why it’s popular with gringos but it sucks so do yourself a favor and avoid it.

If you want to pick up cute girls who are not heavily exposed to gringos like at Shennanigans, go to Casa Da Matriz in Botofogo (Rua Henrique de Novais 107). It’s a small club with a house party feel that attracts a laid back crowd. Friday is more crowded with mainstream music but Saturday rock nights are also good.

If you want to get the Brazilian samba experience, head to Rio Scenarium in Lapa (Rua do Lavradio 20). Just don’t come here to pick up because much of the crowd is approaching their 50’s. For a younger night hit the Lapa street party on Friday night near the arches. If you are trying to hook up though you’ll have to go inside a bar or club because the quality on the street is not very good.

Threesome?
Most hotels that are girl-friendly will not charge for your girl, because technically you have paid for 2 people for the room. However, most hotels will charge you if you bring more than 1 girl, with about $12/girl extra. This has nothing to do with the girls policy and everything to do with an occupancy policy. In many places, people will book a small room and try to fit 2 large families in there, or a group of 8 guys, with some sleeping on the floor. In order to circumvent these cheapo’s, hotel policy is that they charge per person extra the limitation of the room.
Another thing to note from experience is that when you bring in multiple girls, make sure that the girls are comfortable around each other. It’s still a very conservative culture, and they usually won’t perform well in front of strangers. So, if you get 3 or 4 girls, make sure that all of them know each other or at least work at the same bar.

Also, make it clear to them what services you want performed. If you do not direct and let them know that you want things simultaneous, they will try to go one at a time, with the others taking a break in the bathroom or something.

ACTIVITIES (Non-sexual)

Shopping
-instead of bringing your own swimwear, buy a local, more modern swimwear at a shop near the beach. It may be cheaper here too. You’ll look less like a tourist.
-Shopping malls can be found all over town, with the cheaper ones in the Zona Norte like Shopping Tijuca and Shopping Iguatemi and popular upscale shopping malls concentrated in the Zona Sul like Shopping Rio Sul and Shopping Leblon and São Conrado Fashion Mall and Barra Shopping in Zona Oeste.

Beaches
-Copacabana- your hotel is right there in the most popular beach of Rio.
-Ipanema - grab a spot around Posto 9, which is where you can do some people watching – the girls I mean. Watch the sun set at Arpoador, the perfect place for lovers. with a bottle of wine and watch the sunset from the rocks
-Surf! The waves range from low to Awesome! There is a surfing bus that goes here everyday from 7am to 7pm that will pick you up in Rio and take you to all the beaches. Go to http://www.surfbus.com.br/ for more info.

Restaurants

Rodízio (all-you-can-eat service). These are available in numerous types, although the most well-known are the Churrascaria, all-you-can-eat grilled meats. Don’t forget to drink with Guarana soda (Antarctica brand).

Because its huge coast, many Brazilian specialties are in the seafood area. They are very rich in shrimps, lobster, calamaris, shellfish, clams, mollusks and many other seafood.

Rio has open juice bars. For the best Big Bi's experience, try the Tangerina ao Limão juice along with the famous Bauru sandwich for a total of a mere R$15. Finish it all off with an açaí to go. Their açaí is one of the best in terms of value and taste and the staff are excellent. You must try açaí and guaraná, Amazon fruits which are famous to be the strongest energizers and anti-oxidants of the world.

Cervantes, corner of Rua Barata Ribeiro and Rua Prado Jr. – best sandwich in town

Estrada da Vendinha; restaurantedobira.com.br
This gem is off a nondescript street, but when you sit at the table you’ll get it. It’s like eating in a treehouse, with dreamily romantic views over a lagoon. Order the moqueca, a Brazilian fish stew. The crab and shrimp empanadas are great, too.

Great places to eat and also meet girls in Copacabana:
-Havana Café

Safety

It is important to note that while the following information may panic you and also make you question whether to go or not to Rio, most visitors to the city have a great time with no incidents.

Armed robbery in Rio de Janeiro. As a traveler, even if you don't leave the "Zona Sul" (which include Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea, Jardim Botânico, Flamengo, Laranjeiras, Botafogo, Urca) or Western Suburbs (Barra, Recreio), you may experience a palpable tension over security.

Generally, tourists (gringos) and teenagers are considered "easy" targets for criminals. Day-to-day living has also been affected by this. For example, regular banks all have fortress style security doors and armed security men. Rio can be a dangerous city and it is wise to follow these rules even if they seem over exaggerated.

In order to fully enjoy your trip the traveler should pay attention to simple things. Avoid the downtown area, especially Saara, after dark. Although downtown is a relatively safe place during the day, after-dark all the people who work there have already gone home. If you are going to a theater or a show, it's all right; but do not wander in those dark streets by night. Go to Ipanema beach, all lighted and policed during the night, though even there is not entirely safe for tourists who look obviously like tourists.

Sunday is more dangerous since most shops are closed and their security guards are absent. This makes Centro unsafe in the daytime, and Copacabana less safe at night.

Should you find yourself being mugged, the normal advice applies:
- Don't resist or do anything to aggravate the muggers.
- Try not to stare in their faces as they might think you are memorizing their appearance.
- Eyes to the ground is probably your best bet.
- Let them take anything they want (keep your arms limp).
- Afterwards, leave the scene quickly but calmly (don't run in panic screaming for the police).

In the morning, especially before the police arrive, if you are walking or jogging on, Copacabana should be considered unsafe. Even with people around, joggers are popular targets for mugging. If you plan on jogging make sure not to wear anything that may tempt a mugger (watch, ipod etc) and if you can, wait until after 10:00 AM.

When in downtown during the rush hour, be aware of pickpockets as in any other big city centre. The difference in Rio is that the pickpocket can often be a bit violent: one of them pushing you forward in the bus or to the ground in the street while another one takes your wallet and runs away. It's not that usual or as bad as it sounds, but try to avoid being in real danger by reacting strongly as these guys often operate in armed groups (2-5 people), some unnoticed by you. On weekends, beaches in Rio are watched by helicopters.

In the area around Copacabana beach (and maybe in the city centre), the tourist should be aware of a shoe shining scam. The tourist will be approached by a shoeshiner and to his astonishment discover a large, dirty blot on his shoes (which is actually shoe polish or mustard but looks like quite something else). The tourist is typically shown to a chair and has his shoes or sandals cleaned in the best manner. Only after this service is rendered, the outrageous price of somewhere around R$1000 or more is revealed. At this point, muscular friends of the shoeshiner typically appear to "oversee" the completion of the transaction.

The subway is fairly safe, so it is recommended to use it if you want to go from one place to another. Buses on the South Zone are fairly safe as well, but, in the city centre, they can be quite crowded.

Don't walk around with lots of money in your pocket. ATM's are everywhere (prefer the ones inside shopping centres) and credit/debit cards are widely accepted. But don't walk around without any money: you may need something to give to the bad guys in case you are mugged. Not having money to give a mugger can be dangerous as they may get angry and resort to violence.

Avoid wearing jewelry or other signs of wealth (iPods, fancy cell phones/mobiles, digital cameras, etc.) if possible, at any time of the day, as these attract attention. Thieves have been known to run past targets and tear off necklaces, rings, and earrings without stopping. Earrings are particularly dangerous as tearing them off often harms the owner.

There are around 700 favelas in the city and most of them can potentially be unsafe in Rio: and there is always one near you (by a couple of miles or just a few yards). These are easily recognized by their expansive brick walls, and are often on a hillside. The slums grew from being impoverished neighborhoods but are now large areas ruled by drug lords. If you want to keep your nice vision of Rio, you don't need to go there. However, some favelas are amazingly huge, and a new experience for some -- there are some travel agencies who take people on tours there. If you want to go, pay one of those agencies. NEVER go to a favela by yourself, or with an unknown guide. The tour operators have "safe-conduct pacts" with the local drug dealers. If you don't have one, you'll be in BIG trouble. You'll most likely be approached by the drug baron's guards and asked what you are doing there (and these guys typically don't speak English). If you don't have a good reason (and you probably don't), the consequences could be dire. Don't count on the police to help you, as they don't like to enter the favela either, except in special circumstances, though most likely they will check if you are carrying any drugs upon leaving the favela.

In Brazil, every state has two police forces: the Civil (Polícia Civil) and Military (Polícia Militar). Only the latter wear uniform (in Rio, it is navy blue). The city of Rio also has an unarmed Civil Guard, dressed in khaki. Policemen can usually be trusted, but corruption in Brazil is still rampant and a few officers may try to extort you or demanding a little bribe. When this happens, it is usually very subtle, and the officer may typically say something about "some for the beer" (cervejinha). If you are not willing, refuse and ask for another officer. Don't ever try to bribe a policeman on your own--most of them are honest and you might end up in jail.

The local emergency dial number is 190.

At night, especially after traffic has died down, you may hear what sounds like fireworks and explosions. This is not as menacing as it sounds, though it is still indicative of somebody up to no good. These are often firecrackers set-off as signals in the favelas. It might mean that a drug shipment has arrived and is in-transit or that the police are making a raid into the favela. It is a signal to gang operatives who act as lookouts and surrogate police to be extra-vigilant. However, real shoot-outs may occur, especially on weekends. If you are on the street and you hear a shooting, find shelter in the nearest shop or restaurant.

For your safety, cross at the crosswalks, not closer to the corner, and watch for cars regardless of traffic lights.

Mangueira is a good place. This is close to a favela, so you should go with a guide accordingly.

To watch a football (soccer) match! Yet exercise great caution if you go by yourself especially if two of the local Rio teams are playing (Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, and Vasco). These matches can be very exciting but also very dangerous especially if between Flamengo and Botafogo or Vasco. If it looks like the team for which the fans around you are cheering is losing, it is wise to leave the stadium before the match ends. You don't want to be in the middle of a very angry bunch of football fans when they all cram out of the stadium.

Staying safe is important for you and one should never deny the importance of being alert and self-aware in certain situations. It is to be noted that condoms are always necessary during sexual activities. This will eliminate the risk of a person being a carrier of sexually transmitted diseases.
